Subtasks are essentially a task that has been split into multiple smaller pieces. They allow you to speed up your render as each subtask is assigned to a different node on the backend network Golem. One node equals one computer on the network and are assigned randomly.

Smaller tasks should not be overloaded with a big amount of subtasks, since that will actually slow down the render as a whole. For each subtask you assign, they must all pass certain verification after they've been computed by a node to ensure validity of the result. The verification is very heavy and thus multiple subtasks with no real benefit will just slow it down.
For each frame you have we suggest a max of 2 subtasks depending on how heavy use of particles in your frames.
